2.1.3 Batteries and Power Processing Hardware

2.1.3.a. Flooded Lead-Acid Batteries

Specifications: 12/24/48 V nominal, minimum 100 Ah capacity at C/20 rate

Best Practices: The Series - #7: Photovoltaic Labs - 2.1.3.a. Flooded Lead-Acid Batteries

Suggested Quantity:  Depends on the nominal battery voltage selected (Minimum 12Vdc is required to operate smaller inverters. Real-world battery banks are often 24 or 48 volts, made up of 6-volt-deep cycle units.)

Importance Rating: Advanced.

Comments: This is an optional purchase used to operate battery-based, stand-alone and hybrid inverters.

2.1.3.b. Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid Batteries

Specifications:  12/24/48 V nominal, minimum 100 Ah capacity at C/20 rate

Suggested Quantity: Minimum 12Vdc for operating smaller inverters (Real-world battery banks are often 24 or 48 volts made up of 6-volt-deep cycle units.)

Importance Rating: Advanced

Comments: This is an optional purchase used to operate battery-based, stand-alone and hybrid inverters.

2.1.3.c. Charge Controllers

Specifications: Standard pulse-width modulated (PWM) FET based and maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controllers

Suggested Quantity:  Depends on battery size and voltage.

Importance Rating: Advanced.

Comments: This is an optional purchase that may be necessary for battery-based systems.

2.1.3.d. Battery Chargers

Specifications: This is an optional purchase that may be necessary for battery-based systems.

Suggested Quantity:  One.

Importance Rating:  Advanced.

Comments: This is an optional purchase used to maintain batteries. Many battery-based inverters serve as battery-based chargers as well.

2.1.3.e. Generators

Specifications: 4 KVA to operate with hybrid inverter systems.

Suggested Quantity: One

Importance Rating: Advanced

Comments:This is an optional purchase for demonstrating system control for multi-mode inverters.
